PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Comcast said it will lay off more than 600 Philadelphia employees at the end of the year.
In a letter to Mayor Cherelle Parker, Comcast Vice President Robert Murken said the company remains committed to Philadelphia, where it employs 8,000 people between its two Center City buildings, but it is “fundamentally redesigning” its organization “to compete more effectively in a rapidly changing industry.” The net job loss is about 2% of its local workforce.
About 634 employees will be impacted by the change. The letter said the good news is that the shift will also create jobs: 1100 company-wide, including 500 in Philadelphia.
Comcast has reinvented itself several times, expanding from cable to internet, mobile phones, entertainment and solar power. It announced earlier this year that it plans to spin off its NBCUniversal network.
