PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's deer season, and that means it's time to start looking out for the animals as they'll be darting across roads all over the place.
As you might suspect, most deer-related accidents in the Delaware Valley happen in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery counties.
Justin drives a delivery van and says he's learned a few things about deer behavior along the way.
"They never travel one at a time. They always travel in groups, so if you see one, you know to slow down 'cause there's more coming," he said.
Swerving to avoid the accident is one of the worst things you could do.
Jana Tidwell with AAA Mid-Atlantic says doing so could be a fatal mistake and every year, people drive down embankments and get seriously injured or die because they were trying avoid a deer.
If you see a deer in the distance, try your best to stop or scare the deer away.
"Switch on to your high beams, lay on that horn. Do what you can to try and get that deer to move," she explained.
This is just the beginning of the season. The peak is in November, with the busiest travel times for deer at dawn and dusk, often during rush hour for us.
"Constantly scan the roadway from side to side," she added.
Tidwell says a little extra awareness could save you thousands in repair costs.
