Future of TV, movie shoots in Philly area remain unclear in wake of pandemic

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)  Work on two major television shows that were being shot in the Philadelphia area was brought to a halt when the city and state ordered shutdowns because of COVID-19. So what does the future hold?

Sharon Pinkenson, executive director of the Greater Philadelphia Film Office, said there are lots of discussions, but few solutions.

Key television and movie industry players are trying to sort out how movies and TV shows will be made going forward, she said, and the two productions that were filming here at the time of the shutdown had some big star power: HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” starring Kate Winslet and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Servant” on Apple TV.

Pinkenson said there is still passion in the industry, but it is clearly tempered with caution.

“How many people are going to be on a set? How will they be able to produce the very same story with social distancing? Will they be wearing masks? What are the actors going to do? What are the unions going to say? There’s a lot of unknowns here. People want to go back to work, but they don’t want to get sick,” she said.

She said some behind the scenes work is still going on, but it’s limited.

”Post-production and development continues because that can be done remotely or on the computer or on a series of computers,” she added.
