POTTSTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Pottstown continues the clean-up from last week's deadly, heavy rains, with borough officials estimating the costs as high as seven-figures — and that's not counting what it will cost residents to clean up and dry out.
In a typical heatwave like this, the Fountain of Youth spray park in Pottstown would be filled with ths sound of kids playing, but instead it's silent. Signs hang on the walls saying the park is closed until further notice while they assess the damage.
Across the street, the cleanup continues for Scott Garcia, who says he got about five feet of water in his basement.
"I looked out, and I was like, 'Oh, wow. Manatawny Street's flooded,'" he said. "And a little bit later I looked out and said, "Oh, wow. Chestnut Street's flooded, and the car's under water.'"
As Garcia shared his story, a trash truck was making a special run for his block, a spray of water flowing out the back and streaming down the street as the piles of sopping wet belongings were compacted.
His neighbor buddy says the water came up fast.
"I knew I had to get out. And we literally swam the water was up to my waist. The dog was doing the doggy paddle, trying to swim back to the house."
Garcia says his clean-up and repairs will top $30,000. Pottstown Borough officials say their clean-up will likely top $1 million.
