PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Division III Widener University football team is preparing for the 2021 season and looking to make some noise in the Middle Atlantic Conference.

Widener went 5-5 in 2019, 4-4 in the MAC, but lost its 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic, so Head Coach Mike Barainyak has a group of players that are anxious to get back out on the field.

The Pride have some veteran players that have enjoyed a lot of success in Chester. Barainyak looks at them as the backbone of this year’s squad.

"We have four really great leaders who are coming back who are seniors. Our four captains, I think it starts with them. Ryan Stecklein, who is a senior offensive tackle for us, Mario Scotese who is a senior defensive end, senior wide receiver James Gillespie and a senior defensive back Anthony Jordan," said Barainyak.

"I think those four guys have really set the tone for us, over the last year and a half, but certainly when we got here together and started taking the practice field this fall.”

Widener is scheduled to open its 2021 season on Saturday, September 4 th in Glassboro against Rowan University.
