PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Daryl Morey has been fired as president of basketball operations of the Philadelphia 76ers.
The organization announced it in a press release Tuesday night, after an initial report from ESPN. The move comes just two days after the Sixers' second-round playoff exit against the Knicks.
Morey had been in his role for six years. His teams had never made it past the second round, he notably made the trade that sent Ben Simmons to the Brooklyn Nets for James Harden. He also drafted Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Daryl personally and professionally, and I’m grateful for his contributions over the last six seasons,” said team owner Josh Harris in a statement. “After speaking with Daryl, we determined that it was time for a fresh start.”
Bob Myers, Harris' president of sports, will lead the search for a new Sixers president. He will also run basketball operations in the interim.
“I know how much the 76ers mean to the City of Philadelphia, and it’s important we find the right leader to shape the future of this team,” Myers said in a statement.
“The process will start immediately, and we will be thorough and deliberate in our evaluations. I believe this is a destination for top talent across the league and look forward to solidifying our infrastructure moving forward.”
ESPN reports head coach Nick Nurse will stay on for another season.
The 76ers have scheduled a press conference for Thursday.
