PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Carson Wentz wanted to correct some mistakes during the Eagles’ bye week. He also wanted some much-needed downtime.
He was able to have both.
Now, the Eagles are back at work, preparing to face the New York Giants on Sunday.
Wentz looked over some of the problems that existed in the first half of the season, but he also made time to be with his family, which helped the quarterback take a mental break from football.
“It’s a lot of family time,” he said. “It’s a lot of just getting away and taking a deep breath and recharging for the second half of the season because, obviously, you don’t get to see your family a whole bunch during the grind of the season.”
While Wentz enjoyed his time off, he also made sure to get some work in. Wentz has struggled throughout much of the first half of the season, and the quarterback knows he must play better over the final eight games.
“You definitely have a couple of days to kind of reflect and think offensively as a whole,” he said. “What can we do better? Personally, what can I do better? Where can I change my game to some extent or have little things that are happening that we can kind of correct?”
Wentz and his teammates have an opportunity this Sunday to tighten their grip on the NFC East lead. The 3-4-1 Eagles can all but finish off the 2-7 Giants. However, the Eagles needed a pair of late touchdowns to beat New York in their first meeting of the season. Wentz believes the Giants defense will once again present a difficult challenge.
“Their defense just keeps improving,” said Wentz. “Every week they’ve improved. I have a lot of respect for their D-coordinator and what they do on that side of the ball. For us, it’s just executing and taking what they give us.”
Now that the bye week is over, there are eight games remaining for the Eagles. Wentz believes the bye week came at the perfect time of the season, and he feels ready to get back on the field.
“The bye week is great for everybody mentally and physically,” he added. “Coming in the middle of the season when it did for us was great. My body definitely feels rejuvenated and ready to go, so I'm thankful for that.”
