PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- As of Thursday morning, the Philadelphia Flyers matchup at the New York Rangers scheduled for Sunday has been postponed. With three Flyers on the NHL's COVID-19 list, the team will have gone 10 days without playing a game by the time they take on the Rangers in one week.
Those three Flyers are captain Claude Giroux, defenseman Justin Braun and defenseman Travis Sanheim. Being on the list doesn't necessarily mean that a player has tested positive.
This will be the Flyers' fourth postponement so far this season.
The league said in a statement, in part, "These decisions were made by the League's, NHLPA's and Club's medical groups. The Flyers' organization has (followed), and will continue to follow, all recommended guidelines aimed at protecting the health and safety of its players, staff and community at large as set by the NHL, local, state and national agencies."
The last time the Flyers played was this Sunday afternoon against the Washington Capitals. On Monday, their scheduled games against the Devils on Thursday and Saturday were postponed because New Jersey had several players unavailable due to the NHL's COVID-19 protocols. So, initially they were supposed to go only until Saturday without a game. But then their matchup against the Capitals was called off because the number of players unavailable for COVID-19-related reasons grew.
The Flyers' next scheduled game is Thursday, Feb. 18, against the Rangers at Wells Fargo Center. After that, they're slated to take on the Boston Bruins in the NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe event on Sunday, Feb. 2.
The NHL expects the Flyers to be able to re-open their facilities for practice on Monday.
