PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A day before Halloween, the longtime center of the Philadelphia Eagles joined in his team’s appreciation of cartoon hero Batman after a dominant win over the in-state rival Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
As the Eagles wrapped up a 35-13 victory at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, Jason Kelce grabbed a black mask embodying the "Caped Crusader." He wore it into the locker room with adoring fans cheering him and his undefeated Eagles teammates.
Kelce is apparently the fifth Eagle to embrace all things Batman in this so-far perfect season.
The trend began with cornerback Darius Slay and wide receiver A.J. Brown around the start of the season, according to the Eagles. Slay, the keeper of all things superhero on the team, bestowed the Batman cape on Brown in celebration of his performance against the Detroit Lions in Week 1, and spread it to other Eagles point producers.
Kelce spoke about a month ago about his own potential emulation of Batman on the team, one which more reflects his lineman's physique. Slay said Kelce’s self-given Batman nickname would not suffice since Kelce rivals Slay in, well, a certain category.
We’ll let you be the judge of what version of Batman Kelce truly embodies.
Of course, Kelce has a history of headwear costumes connected with big Eagles triumphs. Like that one day after arguably the Birds’ greatest-ever triumph, when the city converged for a parade and rally after the Eagles’ win in Super Bowl LII.
Kelce’s tribute to the Mummers was legendary.
This Sunday, Kelce, Lane Johnson, and the rest of the line protected Jalen Hurts well enough to deliver 285 passing yards and four touchdown throws in the Eagles’ triumph Sunday.
That makes Kelce an undefeated Batman like the rest of the Birds.
