The Eagles have made quarterback Jalen Hurts the highest-paid player in NFL history, and it doesn’t seem like it was all that difficult to come together.
In fact, Philly GM Howie Roseman told reporters earlier this week that the deal came together in a hurry.
How? By Hurts commanding a big salary after a career season, but by the Eagles also maintaining cap flexibility in the early years of Hurts’ deal, in order for the team to continue to build around their star quarterback while he’s in his prime.
“I think that's part of the deal, by doing it at the time that we did and by being able to work together to do things that were important to them and important to us, and for us it's about flexibility around him,” Roseman said. “This is the ultimate team game, and he needs to have talented people around him. Jalen recognized that. Nicole recognized that, to be able to do this in a way that also gives us an opportunity to get good players.”
Simply put, both sides came to the negotiating table hoping to find a balance of what was best for the player and the organization, and the result was a home run, with Hurts earning more money than any other player in league history, but only carrying salary cap hits of $6.15 million and $13.56 million, respectively, over the first two seasons of his extension.
“I think it's a heck of a deal for Jalen,” Roseman said. “I think it's a heck of a deal for the Eagles.
“I think those are really the best kind of deals.”
