PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- The Eagles are a sinking ship, and the offense is pulling them under.

Another frustrating four quarters ended on Monday with a 23-17 loss to Seattle in a game that was hardly as close as the score indicated. It was 23-9 before a touchdown and two-point conversion narrowed the gap with 12 seconds remaining.

The defense kept the Eagles in the game early, but the offense sputtered throughout the night. Carson Wentz threw for 215 yards, but he and the rest of his offensive teammates put together another another overall subpar performance.

"We just didn't make enough plays and win enough of our one-on-ones, and I didn't make enough plays or make enough good throws," Wentz said.

Wentz made enough good throws to stay in for all but a couple of plays when Jalen Hurts took over under center. Wentz was able to make some strong throws, but he also had his misfires, which have become customary in 2020.

Meanwhile, the defense played well enough to give the offense a chance. The one exception was their inability to stop Seattle receiver D.K. Metcalf. The man who the Eagles passed on in the 2019 draft caught 10 passes for 177 yards. Eagles cornerback Darius Slay took the blame after getting burned by Metcalf in their one-on-one battles.

"I let the team down," Slay said. "I told the defense that game was on me. I've got to play better. Props to D.K. for giving me the good work. We were competing every play, but I lost every 50/50 ball, and I've got to be better."

Doug Pederson also has to be better. The Eagles head coach gambled and lost on two questionable fourth down situations. One at midfield early in the fourth quarter was stopped, and the Seahawks turned the short field position into three points. The other came later in the quarter when a field goal would have brought the Eagles to within one score. The Seattle defense did its job once again and stopped the Eagles short of the end zone.

Meanwhile, Pederson is searching for ways to get his offense back on track.

"It just comes down to each guy doing their job and not doing too much," Pederson said. "Sometimes when you get in these situations, you try and do too much."

For the first time, there is speculation about Pederson's future with the team. The loss to Seattle did not help. And the upcoming schedule, which includes a trip to Green Bay on Sunday, does not appear to make the situation any easier. At 3-7-1, the Eagles don't even look capable of winning the weak NFC East.

Brandon Graham says all of the players want to make sure Pederson remains in Philadelphia.

"Doug's got us fighting," Graham said. "We're always going to fight for whoever is there, but definitely, for sure, we're trying to make sure we keep him here."
