PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Can the Eagles bring the Denver Broncos down from the high altitude of the Rocky Mountains? Will the shorthanded Sixers bounce back from their first slide of the season? Can the Flyers build on their early-season success?
Here are five games to watch this week.
Philadelphia Eagles (3-6) at Denver Broncos (5-4), Sunday at 4:25 p.m.
The Eagles make their third trip ever to Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday to take on the Denver Broncos. They lost their first two trips there in 2005 and 2013.
While those were different eras of Eagles football, this weekend is still going to be a challenge for Nick Sirianni’s Birds. While offense appears to be trending in the right direction, Jonathan Gannon’s defense is still in question after another opposing quarterback had a very high completion percentage.
Offensively, Denver averages just under 21 points per game, though they just defeated the Dallas Cowboys on the road 30-16.
The Broncos give up an average of 17 points per game, which is the second-best in the NFL.
Because Denver is in the AFC, the Eagles don’t play them often. Still, the Birds haven’t won in Denver since 1989.
Philadelphia 76ers at Utah Jazz, Tuesday at 10 p.m.
Before their six-game road trip — five of which are out west — the Sixers first have to host the Toronto Raptors on Thursday. Then, they start the trip with a date against the lowly Pacers on Saturday.
The fun really begins at the Utah Jazz Tuesday night. The Jazz have one of the better records in the Western Conference.
Of course, who knows what the Sixers lineup will look like by then. Six key players missed this week’s loss to Milwaukee, four of whom due to COVID-19 protocols, including Joel Embiid.
Despite losing two in a row, they showed a lot of fight, nearly rallying from a 19-point deficit to the Knicks and standing toe-to-toe with Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks.
Philadelphia Flyers at Carolina Hurricanes, Friday at 7 p.m.
The Flyers find themselves on a scoring drought — only putting the puck in nine times in their last six games after 23 goals in their first five.
Friday will present one of their more difficult tests so far — the Carolina Hurricanes, who will enter the match with a 10-1-0 record, which is good for the most points in the Metropolitan Division.
Villanova men’s basketball at UCLA, Friday at 11:30 p.m.
College hoops season is underway, and Villanova’s second game of the season is a good one.
The fourth-ranked Wildcats visit No. 2 UCLA Friday night in late-night basketball.
The Cats won their first game of the season over Mount St. Mary’s 91-51, with Justin Moore dropping 27 points.
Penn State vs. Michigan, Saturday at noon
The No. 23 Nittany Lions host Jim Harbaugh’s No. 9 Wolverines.
Last week, PSU snapped its three-game losing streak with a 31-14 win at Maryland. They have a chance to not only put a wrench in Michigan’s aspirations but also pick up a quality win for themselves if they take care of business.
