PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Lynn Farquhar has been the head field hockey coach at Saint Joseph’s University since 2014. On her watch, the Hawks have become an Atlantic 10 power.

Farquhar’s Hawks earned trips to the NCAA Tournament from 2017-2019. They are a constant presence in the national rankings.

She talks about building the foundation of the program and getting to where they are now.

“Yes, we have to earn it and work for it. However, it’s okay to talk about winning," Farquhar said in describing how she built the foundation of the program during the latest edition of my podcast, 1-on-1 with Matt Leon.

"We can talk about winning, because if you never talk about it, then how are you going to make it happen? I know different coaches probably feel differently about winning. It’s not the only goal. It can be an end goal, though. So we need to learn, 'What does winning look like?' Because that is success. And if we want to talk about winning an A-10 (championship), then let’s put it out there, because then you make it real and then we have to put actions towards our words.”

Farquhar played her college field hockey at Old Dominion. After graduating, she was actually ready to head down a different career path.

“I was set to go with marketing. I did some internships, actually had a full-time marketing job," Farquhar admitted.

"Then, over the summer for four or five years, I had always done camps. So I was doing camps, and then I heard University of Richmond (then-head coach) Ange Bradley had an opening. It was a volunteer assistant (role). Ended up turning down my full-time job. Again, my parents probably think I’m crazy, and this is why. So, I turned down this marketing job and said, ’Well, I’m going to be a volunteer.’ "
