PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Separate shootings left two men dead in the city overnight.
One shooting took place in the Spring Garden neighborhood, at North 17th Street and Wallace Street. Neighbors heard gunshots around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday.
According to police, somebody drove a 34-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his chest and leg to the hospital, where he died.
One resident, David Kratz, didn’t hear the shots, and was stunned to see several police cars and a crew cleaning blood off the street and sidewalk when he stepped outside his home.
“[The] community has seemed pretty safe,” Kratz said. “I’ve lived here for almost 24 months and I haven’t really seen anything like this, so, yeah, It’s pretty surprising.”
Another neighbor, with tears rolling down her face, was very shaken up. She knew the victim, and said while he did not live in the neighborhood, he visited often because he had grown up there. She heard that there was some sort of argument, but didn’t know what it was about.
Police have not given a motive for the shooting and are still investigating, but said that a 24-year-old man surrendered to them peacefully and turned over his handgun. They also found another gun at the scene. No charges have been filed so far.
A second shooting took place less than an hour later in Southwest Philadelphia, at 59th Street and Warrington Avenue, near Kingsessing.
Police found a 38-year-old man shot several times in the front passenger seat of a white Volkswagen. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.
No arrests have been made in that case, and police have not determined a motive.
