Former Flyer Jeremy Roenick finally makes it into Hockey Hall of Fame

TORONTO (KYW Newsradio) — Former Philadelphia Flyer Jeremy Roenick headlines the NHL Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

The Hockey Hall of Fame announced its class of 2024 on Tuesday and Roenick is joined by Pavel Datsyuk, Shea Weber, Natalie Darwitz, and Krissy Wendell-Pohl in the Players category, and Colin Campbell and David Poile in the Builders category.

Roenick played three seasons in the Orange and Black from 2001 to 2004.

One of his defining moments as a Flyer came in the 2004 Eastern Conference Semifinals when he scored the series clinching goal in Overtime against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 6. The Flyers would go on to lose to current head coach John Tortorella's Tampa Bay Lightning in the Conference Finals, who went on to win that year's Stanley Cup.

Roenick put up 67 points in his best season with the Flyers, and retired with a points total of 1,216, made up of 513 goals and 703 assists amassed across 19 seasons in the NHL.

He was first drafted to the league in 1988 straight out of high school by the Chicago Blackhawks with the eighth overall pick in that year’s NHL Entry Draft.

Roenick is the fifth highest scoring American-born player in NHL history, and also won a Silver Medal with the U.S. Olympic team in Salt Lake City in 2002.

After he retired, Roenick became a broadcaster with NBC Sports. In 2020, He was suspended for making inappropriate comments about coworkers on a podcast.

Roenick has been eligible for induction since 2012.

He and the rest of the 2024 class will be officially inducted in a ceremony slated for November.
