PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Eagles placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve Saturday, meaning he will miss at least four weeks as he gets treatment for a superficial blood clot in his calf, which was announced by the team earlier this week.
On Thursday, the team ruled Hurts out of the Eagles' Oct. 18 matchup with the Carolina Panthers because of the clot.
In that announcement, the Eagles said Hurts likely sustained the injury after being cleated in the team's Oct. 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams. Doctors performed an ultrasound in London before the Eagles played the Jaguars a week later on Oct. 11, but cleared him to play.
The team performed another ultrasound on Wednesday this week and discovered the clot had moved, ruling him out for the Panthers game.
As Hurts begins his extended stay on the IR, backup Tanner McKee will get the keys to an Eagles offense that has struggled so far this season. It's among the NFL's lowest-scoring, and has also gained among the fewest yards of any in the league.
McKee was drafted out of Stanford in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He has two career starts and has one win and one loss in those games heading into Sunday's matchup with the Panthers.
Hurts was declared out of Sunday's game against the Panthers earlier in the week.
