PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Thomas Jefferson University women’s basketball team is one of the top squads in the country and one of their best players recently made program history.
Senior guard Morgan Robinson broke Jefferson’s career record for assists in an 81-68 win over Dominican on Jan. 6. She set the mark with her 13th and final assist of the game, setting up teammate Sam Yencha for a jumper.
“Once I got it, it hit me really hard,” said Robinson. “Me and Sam were cheering.”
The 13 assists in the game were a season-high for Robinson.
“I saw an opportunity and my teammates made it easy by making their shots,” she said.
After a couple more games last week, Robinson — who was top in the nation in Division II in assists last season and leads all of Division II in assists this season — now has 669 for her career. The previous program record was 654 assists, held by Maribeth Rogers for almost 40 years.
“It’s very self-validating because everyone’s always telling me to shoot more, score more. So it just proves to everyone how hard I work to create opportunities for my teammates to be open, and they make their shots and they make it easy for me,” she added.
Robinson, who went to Kingsway Regional High School in South Jersey, is a big reason why the Rams are 14-1 this season and ranked in the top 10 in the country.
