PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The University of Pennsylvania football team is looking to make a push for an Ivy League title this season.

It has been a while since we have seen the Quakers, as they did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Back in 2019, Penn finished 5-5 overall, 3-4 in the Ivy League.

Penn starts its season later than everyone else, so the Quakers are still in the midst of preseason camp. Head coach Ray Priore talked to KYW Newsradio about some of the strength he sees on the roster.

“On offense, I would have to say it is in our running backs corps and our wide receivers,” he said.

“At wide receiver, we bring back two all-league performers in (seniors) Ryan Cragun and RJ Starkey. (Senior) Owen Goldsberry came on towards the end of the year, so we have some good depth there. (Grad student running back Isaiah) Malcome comes back after injury, and we have two sophomores at the time (in 2019) who played a lot, Trey Flowers and Jonathan Mulatu. So we have some good depth brewing there.”

Priore had yet to name a starting quarterback.

On defense, Priore has veteran players whom he said will lead the way.

“(Defensive lineman) Prince Emili is coming back. (Linebacker) Jacob Heimlicher, all these kids played as sophomores, (defensive lineman) Micah Morris. At the inside linebacker, (grad student) Brian O’Neill comes back, so we’re really happy there. In the secondary, we have three or four kids that had significant playing time already. So we’re excited about those prospects right now.”

Penn opens its season on the road, Saturday, September 18 against Bucknell.
