PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The West Chester University football team will be looking to compete for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title when they return to the field this fall.
The Division II Golden Rams did not compete in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but as they prepare for 2021, head coach Bill Zwaan says they have a deep roster.
“We’ve got a lot of experience. We’ve got a lot of guys coming back,” Zwaan told KYW Newsradio.
“We have a deep wide receiver corps, our running backs – (sophomore) Ja’Den Mckenzie, (senior) Phil Poquie, both excellent players who played for us couple of years ago. Defensive line, we’re really strong, returning three of four starters, and we are two or three deep there. Our linebacking corps is back. Our secondary, three of those guys are back, but we also picked up a transfer or two that’s going to help us, so we’ve built some depth there.”
One position where the Golden Rams don’t have a lot of experience is quarterback. Zwaan talked about who will be the starter there.
“It’s going to be Desman Johnson, who is a freshman,” he said.
“Not a true freshman, he came in a year ago, so he did practice with us last spring. And he did some nice things in the spring, but we really weren’t expecting him to take the job here in the fall, but he has. He has performed really well.”
In 2019, West Chester went 9-3 (5-2 PSAC), qualifying for the Division II playoffs.
West Chester opens its season on Friday night with a road game at Bentley.
