PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Phillies' improbable run to the World Series completely consumed the city this past month. Unfortunately, that run ended in a disappointing loss to the Houston Astros Saturday night.
We’re closing the chapter on the 2022 Phils, but how have Philly’s other teams been doing while Red October was in full throttle? If you haven’t been paying attention, the Eagles are red-hot.
The Eagles are flying high
Let’s be honest — the Phillies might have owned October, but the Eagles are always on everybody’s minds. After all, they’re 8-0 and the only undefeated team in the NFL.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts has been playing at an MVP level, new top wide receiver A.J. Brown has been a wonderful addition to the team, and the defense has been creating turnovers.
The remaining regular season schedule is as follows:
• Nov. 14 vs. Washington (4-5)
• Nov. 20 at Indianapolis (3-5-1)
• Nov. 27 vs. Green Bay (3-6)
• Dec. 4 vs. Tennessee (5-3)
• Dec. 11 at New York Giants (6-2)
• Dec. 18 at Chicago (3-6)
• Dec. 24 at Dallas (6-2)
• Jan. 1 vs. New Orleans (3-5)
• Jan. 8 vs. New York Giants (6-2)
This is the first time in franchise history that the Eagles are 8-0. The next best team in the NFC is the 7-1 Minnesota Vikings. The Eagles beat them in Week 2, but the Vikings certainly can’t be taken for granted. Neither can the surprising 6-3 Seattle Seahawks, as well as the Cowboys and Giants.
When will the Sixers turn things around?
It has been a bumpy road for the Sixers. Ten games into the season, they are 4-6 and haven’t been above .500 once.
Joel Embiid hasn’t felt well recently, so he’s been out of the lineup. The hope is he returns Monday night against the Phoenix Suns at the Wells Fargo Center. Meanwhile, James Harden is expected to miss one month due to a tendon strain in his right foot.
Whether Embiid is on the floor or not, this is an opportunity for third-year guard Tyrese Maxey to take his game to another level and get the ball in his hands more often. Sooner or later, the Sixers will also need to figure out the chemistry between their new players.
It’s an 82-game season, but they are currently 10th in the Eastern Conference, with a lot of teams nearby in the standings. The next five games against good teams will be critical.
Don’t knock the Philadelphia Flyers
While the Sixers have been disappointing early on, the Flyers are coming in hot. Some fans are thrilled; others may prefer they lose more often than win so they can get better draft picks.
But at the start of this season, you would have been hard-pressed to find someone who thought the Flyers would be a good team. But their 6-3-2 record speaks for itself in John Tortorella’s first season as head coach.
Their 14 points through 11 games are good for fourth in the Metropolitan Division, and only 1 point behind the last wild card spot.
A good goaltender goes a long way, and Carter Hart is 6-0-2 this season with a 1.97 goals-against average and a .946 save percentage.
New era of college hoops
College teams often get overlooked for the professional sports in Philly, but a new era of college basketball tips off Monday night. Villanova men’s basketball is hosting La Salle, Temple is playing Wagner and Penn is visiting Iona.
Jay Wright retired after the last Wildcats season, and Kyle Neptune stepped in to replace him. La Salle has a new coach too: The legendary Fran Dunphy is back on the bench, this time leading the Explorers.
Saint Joseph’s University opens its season Friday against Houston in the Veterans Classic in Maryland. Drexel’s season begins Friday at home against Old Dominion.
As for women’s basketball, there are a few games to look out for this week:
Villanova at Marist, Monday 7 p.m.
Temple at Princeton, Monday 5 p.m.
Saint Joseph’s vs. Bucknell, Monday 7 p.m.
La Salle at Howard, Monday 7 p.m.
Penn at Marist, Thursday 7 p.m.
Drexel vs. Rider, Thursday 6 p.m.
