PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — How fitting on Dallas week that the KYW Newsradio Philadelphia Sports Fan of the Week is a youngster who proudly defends his Philadelphia sports teams, including the Eagles, in rival territory.
Meet 14-year-old Noah Engel of Rockwall, Texas, which isn't too far from Dallas, home of the heavily disliked Cowboys.
Noah, a high school tight end, has grown up with his peers rooting for the teams he directly opposes, but it doesn't stop him from proudly wearing his Kelly Green Jason Kelce jersey and, as he described it, "put[ting] all the Cowboys fans in their place."
Noah's family moved from Wharton, New Jersey (New York sports territory) to Texas four years ago. His father, Marc, lived in South Jersey during the Flyers' heyday in the 70s and remembers the 1980 World Championship Phillies. When Noah was old enough, he began to follow in the fandom footsteps of his dad. He was hooked.
"[Philadelphia's] just always been a great city for sports and the fans are so passionate about the teams," Noah said.
The Engels flexed that passion at the Cowboys-Giants Thanksgiving Day game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas with a sign that said, "Thanks to the NY Giants for GIVING us Saquon Barkley Go Birds."
"It felt great to know that Saquon is in a better place now," Noah said with Marc, laughing right next to him. "He was just being wasted with the Giants."
When Noah gets older, he wants to be a football coach.
