PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Swarthmore College baseball player is being applauded after helping to put out a fire near one of his team's game sites.
Josh Bein is an outfielder for the Garnet. He is currently playing for the Sherrill Silversmiths of the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
Bein said he and a couple teammates were taking batting practice on Monday, June 7 in Sherrill when they noticed smoke coming from a neighboring house’s garage.
They jumped into action to help the homeowner.
“First of all, (we) knocked on his door to alert him. Then we grabbed the hose from our field that actually reached, which gives you some context on how close this community is, and hopped the neighbor’s fence to grab their garden hose," said Bein.
"As the fire department was on their way, we just tried to get the roof and interior as wet as we could with those hoses, so they’d have a bit of an easier job when they got there.”
No one was hurt.
Bein and his teammates received praise from the local fire chief, the police chief as well as the home owner.
He went on to play that night for the Silversmiths after his heroics, and went 1-4 at the plate, scoring a run.
