PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For the first time since 1999, the Ursinus College football team made the field for the Division III NCAA playoffs. The Bears will open the tournament on the road at King’s College Saturday afternoon.

The Bears earned an at-large berth into the field thanks to a 9-1 overall record. They finished second in the Centennial Conference with a 5-1 league mark.

The Bears score about 37 points a game while allowing just under 15. Head coach Peter Gallagher said he has a special group.

“We’re excited to go to practice every day,” he said. “We’re excited to be with each other. Our players say, ‘I get to, I don’t have to.’ They love to go to the weight room. They love to go to the practice field.

“It’s just a lot of fun, and the way it should be, right? College football should be fun, and it is. At Ursinus, we’ve been having a lot of fun.”

The Bears will take on a King’s team that is 9-1 and the champion of the Middle Atlantic Conference. Kickoff is set for noon in Wilkes-Barre.
