PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 12-year-old boy from New York died during an annual school trip in the Poconos, authorities said.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening on the Lehigh River in East Penn Township, according to the Carbon County Coroner’s Office.

The boy, identified as Cesar Albarracin Guncay, was a sixth-grade student in the Sag Harbor Union Free School District on Long Island.

Authorities said he fell into the river just before 7 p.m. while rafting with classmates. Emergency crews responded to a report of a drowning and recovered the boy from the water. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

In a letter to parents, the Sag Harbor Superintendent calls the news "devastating," and said Guncay's death "will leave an irreplaceable space in our classrooms."
