NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A judge in Ocean County has granted pretrial release for the man accused of operating a boat while drunk, resulting in a crash that killed two of his grandchildren in Barnegat Bay last month.
Prosecutors said 64-year-old Stephen Schneider had a blood-alcohol level of .16 — twice the legal limit — when he crashed into a channel marker the night of July 19. It happened in the Intracoastal Waterway in Berkeley Township.
His grandchildren, a 9-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy, were ejected from the boat and died.
Schneider is facing two charges, including reckless vessel homicide and driving a boat under the influence.
The children’s father asked the court for pretrial release. The judge granted the request, with conditions that Schneider cannot operate a car or a boat and that he must undergo a court-ordered evaluation.
