PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — As the number of COVID-19 cases spike in Philadelphia, the city’s police department is mourning the deaths of two of their own, who have both died of COVID-19 just about a week apart. The number of cases is reportedly spreading through police districts — with little help from the city.
The police union confirms both Capt. Frank Milillo, a 31-year veteran and Officer Tab Ali, a 25-year veteran, died from COVID-19.
Milillo, who died this week, was known for being a dedicated family man who mentored fellow police officers.
“Well-respected commander, good guy, all around guy, a community guy, a family guy,” said FOP President John McNesby.
He said Ali, a former Marine, died last month from the virus.
“Everybody — from what I understand — up in the Manayunk area knew him, and knew him well. He was always up and down the streets, he was a bike cop and very well respected in the community,” McNesby said.
He said in total, four city officers have died this year from COVID-19.
Police officials say they are providing protective equipment as part of their on-going protocol, which started earlier this year, and the FOP is providing additional sanitizer, masks and disinfectant if any officer needs.
