PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Rain and wind didn’t stop thousands of runners from hitting the pavement Sunday for the 2025 Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run.
The nation’s largest 10-mile race drew 40,000 runners and walkers to Broad Street, starting at Broad and West Fisher Avenue near Girls High School in Olney and finishing at the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia.
For a trio of friends, Lex, Kimberly, and Nicole, the goal was simple: have fun and finish strong.
“It’s the thrill of it,” said Lex.
It’s a commitment to cross that finish line,” added Kimberly.
Runners came from all experience levels, from first timers to seasoned athletes. Betty, 79, was another standout. She laced up for the 10-mile challenge and was met at the halfway mark with cheers.
“So far, so good,” she said. “Have some fun and do some good.”
Despite the rain and at times gusts of wind and sunshine, runners like Tina crossed the finish line with gratitude.
“I think it was good,” she said. “The weather was perfect.”
When reminded, it was raining, she exclaimed, “I love the rain. It’s cooling, and you’re like running away from the rain.”
The top finishers were:
Male: Joshua Izewski (46:13.73)
Female: Amber Zimmerman (54:01.81)
Non-binary: Bryan Morseman (52:17.67)
Male Wheelchair: Miguel Jimenez Vergara (37:19.74)
