CHERRY HILL, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Cherry Hill is in the process of preserving nearly 250 acres of farm land and open space. Mayor David Fleisher says he’s committed to preserving as much green space as possible.
Cherry Hill is one of the most populated towns in the state, and more housing and businesses are being built everyday. Only one working farm remains in Cherry Hill, but there is a long history of agriculture in town. So town officials are working to preserve it and surrounding land.
“There are treasures in Cherry Hill, and we need to do everything we can to keep it that way,” Fleisher said.
This plan, which is working through the necessary zoning approvals, would preserve Springdale Farm and some surrounding areas, for a total of 248 acres.
“So in certain ways, it memorializes and formalizes areas that are currently being used as farmland, though it might be zoned in a different way. But also, it’s a requirement by both county and state funding sources for it to have the true agricultural designation to be eligible for potential funding sources.”
In addition to Springdale Farm, this would also preserve Springhouse Farm, McNaughton’s Garden Center and a section of Evans Lane.
Fleisher says there will be a second reading of the plan during a Town Council hearing on March 10.
