PINE HILL, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A huge three-alarm fire at a South Jersey apartment complex destroyed 16 units and displaced nearly three dozen people Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the Mansion Apartments in Pine Hill, Camden County for a report of a fire on a balcony around 6 p.m.

Pine Hill Police Chief Christopher Winters said it took firefighters about two hours to get the blaze under control.

While no residents were injured, five police officers and one firefighter were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The Red Cross is assisting affected residents.

“About 16 units were destroyed, affecting 16 families. About 28 to 30 people,” said Winters. “This is obviously devastating. It’s devastating to the families, when you put that in perspective with what time of year it is. It just hits home a lot harder.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
