PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Pennsylvania’s Emergency Management Agency is working to resolve ongoing intermittent issues with the state’s 911 system.

The first issues of dropped calls were reported at Delaware County’s 911 center around 2 p.m. Friday, said PEMA Director Randy Padfield. Alerts came across phones about an hour later.

“The next gen 911 service provider immediately notified our 911 team and engaged to start troubleshooting the issue and identify the root cause of the issue,” he said.

Issues, including dropped calls and no location data with inbound calls or a callback number, were quickly reported in counties across the state.

“And without being able to identify a cause, out of an abundance of caution, a statewide wireless emergency alert system message was sent to the public to notify them of the intermittent issues,” Padfield said.

Authorities are still trying to determine the root cause. If you are in a smaller township or area, you should be able to get through to officers by calling your local police departments directly.

Philadelphia officials urge people to keep calling 911 in the event of an emergency, as some calls are still coming through. Backup systems are in place. They ask people not to call 911 just to check if the system is working.

"We are on top of the issue and working to restore full service as quickly as possible," said Gov. Josh Shapiro in an X post. As of 9:50 p.m. Friday, the issue has not been resolved.
