PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker has tapped long-time community activist and ward leader, Anton Moore, to lead the new Department of Public Engagement and Neighborhood Affairs.
Parker says Moore will be in charge of the 10 Neighborhood Community Action Centers, which are intended to bring city services into communities. She says Moore’s work with Unity in the Community, the nonprofit he started 15 years ago, shows he’s up for the job.
“Because Anton, you have spent your life proving that community is more than a slogan. It is work, and it is a calling, and I’m proud to welcome him into this role, and I know he will serve our city with his heart,” Parker said.
Moore said he wasn’t sure he should take the job because he was committed to his South Philadelphia base, but decided he could do more good working for the city.
“Service isn’t about you, it’s about the people. Just can’t keep it in South Philly, but it travels out to West Philly, North Philly, all around the City of Philadelphia because of the love we have of wanting to see people do good,” Moore said.
Moore replaces Hassan Freeman, who left his job after an altercation with a City Council member. But administration officials say the new office has expanded responsibilities.
