PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For some folks, there's stocking up to be done ahead of the Super Bowl and another round of snow.
Many were picking up their weekend provisions at the South Philadelphia Walmart.
"With the game, and the snow coming, we have to get basic essentials," said Jo Vanaly of North Philadelphia. "Basically a little bit of everything."
Jose from Juniata detailed what that entailed for him. "Food for the Super Bowl, little bit of snow remover," he said. "We're going to need some salt, we're going to need some chili."
"We got ham, we got hamburgers," said Carlos Gonzales of South Philadelphia.
So what are basic essentials for the big game?
"Well, meats like ribs and you got to have the chicken wings," said Vanaly. "We're going to have some salads."
"The essential junk food," chimed in Anthony from South Philly, "has to be a late night Gatorade and maybe one or two Tastykakes."
But this is an unusual year. Lots of people said their gatherings will be small, consisting mostly of just the people in their household.
"My wife caught the coronavirus twice," shared Gonzales.
The snow and the game battled for the bulk of shoppers' attentions. Vanaly said she was stocking up for the Super Bowl more than the storm, and Anthony shared her enthusiasm. "I could go for another day off, but the Super Bowl is very exciting," he said. "But a snow day would be a big bonus."
And Jose's shopping cart breakdown was similar. "I would say it's about 70% junk food, 30% snow removal," he said.
For Ousmane of Southwest Philly, however, "The snow stuff is more because I work and if it snows, I won't be able to work."
But Anthony, among others, noted it's been a while since the city saw back to back weekends of snow.
"These past snow days, we ate (through) all the junk drawers," he said, adding he was looking forward to watching the game and enjoying the snow with his children.
"I have a newborn and a six-year-old so one of them is very excited, and one of them is just getting to touch the first snowflakes," he said.
And Jose said he was definitely ready for the snow. "I'm not the sledder I used to be," he said, "but I can still put it down."
