HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Toll plazas on the Atlantic City Expressway will soon be torn down and replaced with cashless, electric tolls for all drivers.

The goal is to keep traffic moving and use the bill-by-plate method for drivers who don’t have an E-ZPass. South Jersey Transportation Authority Executive Director Stephen Dougherty said this will save time — and lives.

“Beyond the asphalt and electronic sensors, I’m certain the benefits of this initiative will be felt by every citizen, every business and every community along the expressway,” he said, “and the environment will thank us for eco-friendly transportation solutions.”

“We will reduce accidents by getting rid of toll plazas,” added New Jersey Transportation Commissioner Dianne Gutierrez-Scaccetti.

She said this is the first step in going cashless on all the major highways in the state.

“We will all work cooperatively to make sure that we can all collect our revenue and service the public, the toll-payer, in an efficient manner,” she said.

In all, there will be 13 electronic toll gantries set up along the 44 miles of the Atlantic City Expressway. Work to dismantle existing toll plazas will begin soon. Installation is expected to be done in the spring of 2025.
