SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — The Atlantic City Expressway is widening from two lanes to three in a section notorious for bottleneck delays.
A 13-mile stretch of the heavily traveled expressway will expand from the entrance and exit at Route 42 to Route 73 in Winslow Township, with the goal of easing traffic congestion, especially during the summer months when an accident can cause major backups.
Stephen Mazur, South Jersey Transportation Authority chief engineer, said crews won’t need to grab any additional land to build out.
“We call it an inside widening,” he explained. “It widens into the median of the expressway rather than pushing outward toward any privately owned or government property.”
The $180 million project is funded by a previously approved toll increase for the Capital Improvement Project.
Construction isn’t expected to begin for another two years or so, and it will take two years to complete the work.
