NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A 20-year-old has been charged with manslaughter after striking a mother and her two kids in an Ocean County parking lot late Friday morning. One of the kids — a 9-month-old boy — died.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said Maria CobonGuzman of Trenton was driving without a license when she struck a mother pushing her 5-year-old and 9-month-old in a stroller just before noon outside the Jackson NPGS grocery store in Toms River.
All three victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where the baby died. The mother and 5-year-old are in stable condition.
Investigators said CobonGuzman was driving 22-year-old Ariadna Lazaro-Flores’ car, who knew CobonGuzman did not have a license but let her get behind the wheel anyway.
Federal immigration officials said CobonGuzman and Lazaro-Flores are non-citizens and detainers were officially registered against them. They are being held in the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
