PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The driver of an armored truck is fighting for his life after he was shot and robbed on the job, making a delivery of cash to an ATM in South Philadelphia.

According to police, the 24-year-old Brinks armored truck driver was making a delivery to an ATM at the Bank of America branch at Snyder Avenue and Columbus Boulevard, around 2:30 p.m.

At least two people were sitting inside a tan- or gold-colored Sedan parked in front of the armored truck, while the driver was away from the vehicle, Sgt. Eric Gripp told KYW news partner NBC 10.

"The Brinks driver had exited his truck to remove money from the back, at which point he was accosted by these two individuals. It looks like a struggle ensued and, at some point, they shot him," Gripp said.

Gripp said he was wearing a bulletproof vest, but the bullet came at such an angle that it hit him under the vest.

The driver was taken to a hospital for surgery. He is considered critical.

The suspects got away with a bag of cash and the driver's weapon, but police believe they used their own gun in the attack.

Now investigators are checking nearby cameras to see if the truck was followed or if it was a crime of opportunity.

The FBI is now leading the investigation, and police are searching for the people responsible.
