PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A court has given unanimous approval to the Barnes Foundation to temporarily loan its artwork to other cultural institutions.
The Barnes Foundation’s board unanimously approved the loan policy. The Orphans’ Court of Montgomery County stated the ruling is in keeping with founder Dr. Albert Barnes’ mission to “promote the advancement of education and appreciation of the fine arts.”
Before the ruling, the Barnes was restricted in lending its art under the terms of Dr. Barnes’ gift of the collection to the foundation.
The foundation said the modification will improve its educational program and impact.
The collections are comprised of impressionist, post-impressionist and modern paintings — including the largest groups of paintings by Renoir and Cézanne.
The Barnes was relocated from Merion to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia in 2012.
