PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For tourists, visitors and people looking to enjoy the Fourth of July weekend in Philly, the word of the weekend is free. There are a number of family-friendly activities going on that will not put a dent in your wallet.
The party on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway officially gets underway on Monday. But there are festivities leading up to the big day.
Sunday is Museum Day at the Barnes Foundation Museum. It's free to visit and view the various exhibits. And at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, it's pay what you wish. People can come come in, enjoy the museum, bring friends and family and really see Philly and the world through the works of art. Both are located on the Parkway and open until 5 p.m.
There's also a patriotic performance by the Philly POPS on Independence Mall, the latest in a 44-year tradition. That gets underway Sunday at 7 p.m.
It's an original program created and conducted by music director and principal conductor David Charles Abell, featuring three-time GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Ryan Shaw.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to enjoy the show.
