Dr. Bernice King, MLK’s daughter, to speak at West Chester schools event

Public webinar meant to ‘help us become more united,’ district moderator said

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy continues to live on through the work of his children.

His youngest daughter is taking part in a special virtual event with a focus on building greater community throughout the Delaware Valley.

Dr. Bernice King’s father was shot and killed when she was just five years old.

But throughout her life, she has continued his work in civil rights through her organization, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change.

She is bringing that message to our area Tuesday in the virtual webinar.

"In order to have just a great moderated conversation, to bridge the gap, to help us become more united than divided," said Dawn Mader, the director of equity and assessment for the West Chester Area School District who is moderating the discussion.

She said it's neeeded now more than ever, especially for children.

"They often see those black and white images," she said of Dr. King who was assassinated in 1968.

"Dr. King brings an active approach. She’s here, she’s a real person, and she can speak about the work that her father did."

Mader adds the Black History Month event will have takeaways for people of all colors, ages, and backgrounds.

"Be mindful of really just listening, and just understanding different experiences and the struggles that may take place that people may not be aware of," she said.
