PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Actress Betty White would have been 100 years old on January 17. An online movement to commemorate the entertainer and to help raise funds for animal welfare organizations is underway. It's called the "Betty White Challenge."

Organizers have asked the public to donate $5 to an animal shelter or rescue of their choice in Betty White's name. The television icon, best known for roles on "The Golden Girls" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," was a long time supporter of animal rights.
Gillian Kocher with the Pennsylvania SPCA said the Betty White Challenge has donations coming in.
“It's encouraging people to support their local shelters. So of course if you are here in Philadelphia, there are so many wonderful shelters — of course the Pennsylvania SPCA, but there's ACCT Philly, PAWS and so many other little rescues," she said.
"Across the country, think about what a difference that would make for so many different animal shelters. So it really is localizing thd effort and supporting local animal shelters right where you are, something I think Betty would be very proud of."
White died on December 31, less than three weeks before her 100th birthday.
Money donated to the PSPCA will go to to save animals from cruelty and neglect, provide medical and behavioral rehabilitation, and ultimately find them forever homes.
