PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Last week, Gov. Josh Shapiro signed a bill into law that will allow bars and restaurants the option to serve alcohol past 2 a.m. during this summer’s World Cup.

Between June 11 and July 20, establishments can serve alcohol until 4 a.m. as Philly welcomes thousands of visitors for the World Cup and America250 events.

Bars can apply for a permit and pay $500 to be open for those two extended hours. Applications must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the start of the series.

Many Philly residents have mixed feelings about the bill.

“I'm feeling very scared for the bars to be open till 4 in the morning, mostly for the sake of my liver and my wallet. But I think it's gonna be good for the city. Like, I think it's good to have people out," said Nicky.

While he’s set on having a good time, he is a bit worried about service workers.

"Like I hope the bartenders don't mind cause that will also be like a huge change for them.”

State Sens. Joe Picozzi (R-Philadelphia) and Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia, Montgomery counties) sponsored the bill, and Mayor Cherelle Parker supported it.
