PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Fatty liver is a condition associated with obesity and, in some individuals, the condition can lead to severe liver damage.

In addition, alcohol can cause liver damage on its own. It is important to understand that certain over-the-counter medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are also a risk.

A researcher from the University of Michigan warns that certain botanical products also can damage the liver, and many people are unaware.

These products are turmeric or curcumin, black cohosh, ashwagandha, red yeast rice, green tea extract, and garcinia cambogia. Botanical products are not regulated like prescription drugs, and consumers should be aware of the products they are taking.
