PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 2-year-old boy was critically injured in Northeast Philadelphia Monday night when a car hit him as his mother unloaded her vehicle in the parking lot, according to police.

Just after 8 p.m. on Haldeman Avenue in Bustleton, police say a 29-year-old man was driving through the parking lot of an apartment complex when he felt a bump, as if his car went over something, officials say.

The driver immediately stopped and saw a toddler on the ground near his car, the boy’s mother hunched over him.

The driver told police he did not see the child as he was driving. At the time of the incident, it was dark and raining, and officials say the man’s headlights and windshield wipers were on.
