PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub is running for county judge.

Weintraub said he will stay on as district attorney through the year. If elected, he would have two years remaining in his term. He plans to set it up so current First Assistant DA Jen Shorn can step in. He said he believes with her leadership skills, Schorn will be a better DA than he is.

Weintraub declined an interview request with KYW Newsradio, saying he doesn’t want his run to be a distraction for the other workers in his office.

His hope is that by running for judge now, it would give Shorn two years to run the office before she would run for re-election. Weintraub had that advantage when he was appointed in 2016 to succeed David Heckler, when Heckler retired.

Weintraub earned his law degree in 1993 and worked as an assistant DA in Bucks and Lehigh counties, and as an assistant prosecutor in Cape May, New Jersey. He returned to the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office in 2011.

Weintraub played a key role in the 2019 conviction of Cosmo DiNardo, who was convicted of killing four people on a farm in Solebury Township, and the 2019 conviction of the couple who raped and killed their teenage adopted daughter, Grace Packer.

He was also instrumental in implementing several public safety initiatives, including the Domestic Violence Investigation Program and a free gun lock distribution program called Ben’s Campaign, named after a young boy who accidentally shot and killed himself while playing with his father’s gun.
