Bucks County middle school students become ill after eating THC edibles

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Several students at a Bucks County middle school on Thursday became sick after officials said they ate edibles laced with THC.

One student was wheeled out on a stretcher at William Penn Middle School in Yardley.

Doctor Lauren Murphy at Temple University Hospital told our partners at NBC10 that symptoms of intoxication can escalate quickly.

"An overdose is where we see things like children being unable to talk, being dizzy and unable to walk, vomiting, and in the most severe cases, we see seizures or sometimes them being unable to breathe on their own,” she said.

She said symptoms can last from four hours to up to two days in extreme cases. One of the biggest concerns, she said, is that many of these products look like candy.

"There are children and adults who have no idea that cannabis can come in candy form or look just like candy packages.”

The Pennsbury School District said that they're seeing an increase in the use of THC vapes and edibles in high school and middle schools. The district stresses that "drugs are not permitted on school campuses, and students will be disciplined accordingly."
