PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)Read Across America Week begins Sunday. And what better way to celebrate than sharing some of your favorite books with furry friends?

From 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., kids can come to the Burlington County Animal Shelter dressed as their favorite storybook character and read to the dogs and cats.

County officials say this is a great way for children to practice reading and learn about the shelter and its animals.

“We know that everybody has that one favorite book that they love to read so we just want to encourage anybody to come out; all ages are welcomed,” said shelter Director Ericka Haines.

Haines says all the dogs and cats will safely remain behind glass enclosures during the reading sessions. And some, she says, will join in on the dress-up fun, like Avalanche, a white Labradoodle. He will be dyed red to look like his favorite character Clifford the Big Red Dog.

About 100 cats and 100 dogs at the shelter looking to find their fur-ever homes. Adoption applications will be available for anyone interested in meeting with any of the animals.
