PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An innocent bystander was struck and killed by a stray bullet in Kensington early Tuesday. The shooter pulled the trigger a few hundred feet away after he got involved in a fight inside a beer store, investigators said.
The incident started around 12:30 a.m. in the area of Kensington Avenue and Somerset Street.
"The shooter was in the beer takeout [shop]. He was inside [and] was involved in a physical altercation with one or two other males," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
The three men then left the store. The man with the gun started to walk away but then turned around and fired a single shot, police said.
The men he fought with were not hit, but the bullet flew about 200 feet away and hit a woman in the chest.
Witnesses flagged down officers who were on patrol. They picked up the victim and took her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The woman, who was believed to be in her 20s, has not been identified.
The shooter ran off and was last seen on Kensington Avenue, police said. Detectives spoke with witnesses and were able to gather surveillance footage from the beer shop. Police also planned on getting more footage from the neighborhood.
