'What we can do': Camden city, county hold drive-thru food bank

'You just never know what one’s going through': Camden Mayor Vic Carstarphen

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — People throughout the Delaware Valley are still battling food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Camden city and county officials held a drive-thru food pantry Wednesday to help out.

One by one, cars rolled up to the fully stocked bins in Von Neida Park, and volunteers loaded bags of fresh groceries into their trunks.

Camden Mayor Vic Carstarphen said many people continue experiencing the economic fallout of the pandemic and struggle to make ends meet.

No identifications were checked, and no questions were asked as they popped their trunks.

“It’s supplementing. It’s helping. You don’t know everyone’s situation," Carstarphen said.

"What you do know is what we can do, and we try to control that environment in helping in manners like food distribution. You just never know what one’s going through.”

Carstarphen said it’s important to provide opportunities like this because when the budget gets tight and bills need to get paid, food is one of the first items on a family’s chopping block, and some are too proud to ask for help.
