PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — As South Jersey faces the threat of a winter storm, expecting more than 10 inches of snow along the coast and about seven to 10 inches further inland, some residents who need help shoveling out may wonder: Where is all that snow going to go?
For senior citizens and people with disabilities, who might need more help than most, Camden County is bringing back a community service program.
"Some of the issues that seniors have doesn't stop because it snows," said Camden County Commissioner Jonathan Young. "So they still need to get to their dialysis appointment. They still need to get to doctor's appointments. Something might happen where they need emergency services."
Young says those people who need help clearing their sidewalks and driveways can call a hotline and request a crew to come clear out the snow for them.
“Those individuals, they really feel good about themselves, knowing that they are helping our elderly population,” Young said.
The people bringing the muscle are from the Department of Corrections, doing court-ordered community service, Young said.
The program had taken a nearly two-year break because of the coronavirus pandemic. With yet another storm on the way, Young said it was important to bring it back, to take that burden off the people who need help.
The work will not start until the snow stops, said Young, but residents can call 856-783-4808, extension 5035, and leave their name and address to get on the list.
