COLLINGSWOOD, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Collingswood has added a pair of electric vehicle EV charging stations as Camden County continues to expand its charging network.

These two fast-charging stations bring the total in the county to 22. And while that doesn't sound like a lot, it's double the number from last year. County Commissioner Jon Young says they are expanding to try to meet the governor's ambitious green energy goals, along with buy-in from corporations.

"What we've been noticing is your Walmarts, your Wawas, some of your retail spots and some of your municipalities — they're going to try to take some of that infrastructure work off the county," Young said.

"The world is moving in this direction anyway, so we might as well get on board now and figure out how we do it early and get ahead of the game."

The first person to plug into the new charging station was Chris DiPinto, a longtime EV advocate.

"It's exciting, you know. I've been pushing for it," he said. "Me and my wife Sophie have been pushing for this and we're really excited about it, and here it is."

Young says Camden is the only county in the state with an office of sustainability, and they have started transitioning the county fleet of vehicles to EVs. He says they will continue looking for ways to expand.

Assemblyman Bill Moen says at the state level, they will continue leading the charge and making important partnerships with an eye on building out the network, "to ensure these are popping up around South Jersey."

Fees for charging start as low as .40 cents per kilowatt hour.
